List of activities covered by EASR industrial activities permits in Scotland

Metals             

• Ferrous metals - involving the production or processing of ferrous metals including in iron and steel production and in foundries
• Non-ferrous metals - involving the production or processing of non-ferrous metals including in foundries and separation of scrap metals
• Surface treatment of metals/plastics - involving the surface treatment of metals and plastic materials, including processes emitting cadmium

Minerals         

• Asbestos - involving asbestos and asbestos products, including production, finishing asbestos products, and removal of asbestos from railway vehicles
• Cement, lime and magnesium oxide - involving the production, use or storage of cement, lime and magnesium oxide
• Ceramic production - involving the manufacture of ceramic products by firing, firing other than in a kiln and activities involving vapour glazing with salts
• Glass manufacture and production – involving manufacturing of glass or glass fibre, manufacturing of glass using lead or lead compounds or glass product that use lead or its compounds, polishing or etching of glass using hydrofluoric acid or produce hydrogen fluoride gas, and the manufacture of glass or enamel frit
• Other mineral activities involving the manufacture of cellulose fibre reinforced calcium silicate board, melting minerals, size reduction, grading and handling coal or coal products, handling and storing pulverised fuel ash and fusion of calcinated bauxite

Chemicals     

• Organic chemicals - involving the production of or use of organic chemicals in manufacturing including polymerisation using styrene and unsaturated hydrocarbons and polyurethane processing
• Inorganic chemicals - involving the production, release into the air or use of inorganic chemicals in manufacturing, including halogen production and processes using mutagenic compounds
• Other speciality chemicals - involving the production or use of other speciality chemicals in manufacturing including production of pharmaceutical products and explosives

Waste              

• Landfill receiving more than 10 tonnes of waste per day, or with a total capacity of more than 25,000 tonnes
• Disposal of non-hazardous waste more than 50 tonnes per day
• Recovery or mix of recovery and disposal of non-hazardous waste
• Disposal or recovery of hazardous waste - more than 10 tonnes per day
• Temporary storage of hazardous waste
• Underground storage of hazardous waste

Timber and paper    

• Manufacturing of wood products
• Manufacturing wood products involving curing or chemical treatment
• Preservation of wood and wood products with chemicals
• Production of paper, pulp and wood-based panels

Agriculture and food            

• Tanneries - treatment of hides/skins, where capacity is more than 12 tonnes finished products per day
• Disposal or recycling of animal waste/carcasses - more than 10 tonnes/day
• Slaughterhouses - with carcass production capacity more than 50 tonnes/day
• Treatment and processing of animal or vegetable matter for food or animal feed
• Treatment and processing of milk
• Processing, storage or drying by heat of animal or vegetable matter
• Maggot breeding
• Treatment and processing of animal or vegetable matter for animal feed
• Ensiling of fish more than 10m³
• Intensive rearing of poultry, production pigs or sows

• Schedule 23 solvent activities - including:
  • heatset web offset printing
  • publication rotogravure
  • other rotogravure, flexography, rotary screen printing, laminating or varnishing
  • rotary screen printing on textiles or cardboard
  • surface cleaning
  • coating activities
  • wood impregnation
  • footwear manufacture
  • wood and plastic lamination
  • adhesives coatings
  • manufacture of coating mixtures, varnishes, inks and adhesives
  • rubber conversion
  • vegetable oil and animal fat extraction and vegetable oil refining activities
  • manufacturing pharmaceutical products
• Other solvent activities – including:
  • pre-treatment or dyeing textiles,
  • surface coating using organic solvents,
  • repainting or respraying aircraft or railway vehicles,
  • all other coating activities,
  • production of dyes and pigments,
  • manufacture of any coating material using organic solvents

Petrol vapour recovery        

• Storage of petrol at a terminal or the loading or unloading of petrol at a terminal

Other industries       

• Cremation of human remains
• Manufacture of powder for use as a coating material
• Production of carbon or electrographite by incineration or graphitisation
• Tar and bitumen processes (in heating/distilling, road coating)
• Tyre manufacturing using raw materials
• Processing of rubber using carbon black
• Independently operated wastewater treatment plants (not covered by certain EU directives)
• Non-waste anaerobic digestion - coming into regulation from scheduled dates.

Activities not requiring authorisation      

• Research, development, testing of new products/processes (when not involving other regulated emissions)
• Some lower risk/educational/historical uses (e.g. museums) under specific schedule exemptions
