Your business may require an EASR Industrial Activity (IA) permit from SEPA. For example, you will need a permit if your business has a production capacity above a certain level or if you use certain hazardous substances.

If your business is an installation, you will need an EASR IA permit from SEPA.

An installation is a stationary technical unit, such as a self-contained building, permanent structure or fixed plant, used for activities listed in the regulations.

Leather industrial activities

These are industrial activities that have an impact on the environment and are listed in the EASR regulations.

These activities include:

  • tanning of hides and skins where the treatment capacity exceeds 12 tonnes of finished products per day.
  • coating applied to leather using 5 tonnes or more of organic solvent per year
  • surface cleaning using substances that carry one or more hazard statements in quantities greater than 1 tonne per year
  • coating activity applied to leather above 10 tonnes per year
  • footwear manufacture above 5 tonnes per year
  • Surface treatment of leather using organic solvents in activities like dyeing, cleaning, printing, or waterproofing. If the solvent consumption exceeds 150 kg per hour or 200 tonnes per year
  • Operating a combustion plant (e.g., for heating or drying leather) with a thermal input greater than 1 MW but less than 50 MW.

What you must do

If your installation carries out listed activities, you will need a permit from SEPA and you will need to comply with the conditions of the permit.
