Does your energy business require an EASR IA permit in Scotland?

Your business may require an EASR Industrial Activity (IA) permit from SEPA. For example, you will need a permit if your business carries out certain combustion activities or gasification, liquefaction and refining activities.

If your business is an installation, you will need an EASR IA permit from SEPA. An installation is a stationary technical unit, such as a self-contained building, permanent structure or fixed plant, used for activities listed in the regulations.

These are industrial activities that have an impact on the environment and are listed in the EASR regulations.

These activities include:

    • operating a medium combustion plant with a rated thermal input equal to or more than 1MW and less than 50MW
    • combustion of fuels in installations with a total rated thermal input of 50 MW or more
  • thermal treatment including gasification, liquefaction and refining of fuels including oil, gas, coal or coke, including:
    • odorant blending with natural gas or LPG
    • gasification or liquefaction of coal or other fuels
    • production of coke

    • loading, storage or treatment of crude oil or stabilised crude petroleum
    • purifying, refining or conversion of mineral oil and gas, coke, coal or other fuels
    • thermal treatment of carbon fuels for charcoal or treatment of fuels

Note: If your business operates in the nuclear industry you will likely need a Nuclear industries permit  from SEPA.
