Does your chemical manufacturing business need an EASR Industrial Activity permit in Scotland?
Your business may require an EASR Industrial Activity (IA) permit from SEPA. For example, you will need a permit if your business has a production capacity above a certain level or if you use certain hazardous substances.
If your business is an installation, you will need an EASR IA permit from SEPA.
An installation is a stationary technical unit, such as a self-contained building, permanent structure or fixed plant, used for activities listed in the regulations.
Chemical manufacturing industrial activities
These are industrial activities that have an impact on the environment and are listed in the EASR regulations. This includes:
- activities that involve the production of or use of organic chemicals in manufacturing including polymerisation using styrene and unsaturated hydrocarbons and polyurethane processing
- activities that involve the production, release into the air or use of inorganic chemicals in manufacturing, including halogen production and processes using mutagenic compounds.
- producing chemical fertilisers, and pesticides and biocides
- producing and formulating pharmaceutical products using a chemical or biological process
- producing explosives
- using some organic chemicals such as toluene di-isocyanate or methane di-isocyanate
- producing and processing coating preparations, varnishes, inks and adhesives using 100 tonnes or more of organic solvent per year
- producing, formulating and finishing pharmaceutical products using 50 tonnes or more of organic solvent per year
What you must do
If your installation carries out listed activities, you will need a permit from SEPA and you will need to comply with the conditions of the permit.
