Leftovers are ‘Good to Go’ this Festive Season

I’m dreaming of a green Christmas… Our green ‘Good to Go’ scheme lets your customers know that their leftovers can be boxed up and sent home with them to be eaten later by the Christmas tree. We love to over-indulge at Christmas which can often mean food is left-over at the end of our meal. This food, which could otherwise have been eaten, contributes to the 53,500 tonnes of food thrown out by Scottish restaurants each year and to the damaging effects of methane in the atmosphere.

Zero Waste Scotland has developed ‘Good to Go’- a scheme which tackles plate waste by offering Scottish businesses, employing up to 250 people, FREE starter packs containing the materials needed to offer a take-home service for customer leftovers- in effort to reduce food waste.

Businesses can expect:

  • 300 food boxes
  • 300 Good to Go food safety labels (information provided by Food Standards Scotland)
  • 250 Good to Go paper bags
  • Various marketing materials including posters, table toppers and a window sticker
  • Guidance document 

Most effective as a behaviour change tool, this scheme has the potential to save your business money through reduced portion sizes and up-selling of additional courses ‘to-go’ which customers have not managed to eat at the one sitting.

'Bring-home-box' - Northern Ireland

For businesses in Northern Ireland there is the 'Bring-home-box'. Around one-third of waste produced by restaurants in Belfast comes from food that customers have left on their plates.

Belfast City Council's initiative now allows participating restaurants in Belfast to provide a 'Bring-home-box' that allows customers to take their leftovers home and allows businesses to cut down on landfill waste and save money.

The box is compostable and can be recycled in your food waste bin. So next time your out for a meal - ask for a 'Bring-home-box'.
